Yes, you may purchase a grave through the Sexton at the Cemetery. If you are making arrangements with a funeral director, they will help you get in contact with our Sexton to purchase the grave.
The first thing you would do to purchase a grave is get in touch with our Sexton. The Sexton will show you the graves that are available and explain any rules that apply to the Section/grave you choose. The cost of a grave including perpetual care is $600. You will receive a deed for the grave.
The grave is to be used for burial purposes only and follow the rules and regulations of the Virden Cemetery Association.
Perpetual Care is a fund set aside for future maintenance of the Cemetery. A portion of the cost of each grave goes into this fund. The Cemetery may only use the interest earned from this account to spend on maintenance.
The Sexton will show you what areas are available. The west part of the Cemetery is considered the newer section where most of the available graves are located. However, the Sexton will show all of the graves available.
In the past years, a person would buy a block of graves which would consist of 12 graves for his family to use. As time went on, family members made other arrangements and decided not to use those graves. Those graves are not available since they were already purchased.
Graves that have been sold but were never used cannot be resold. The owner of a grave needs to include their Cemetery lot and will it to one person. If this does not happen, a person will need a certified copy of the proof of heirship made in the Circuit Court of Macoupin County, Illinois.
This cost includes opening and closing a grave and seeding once the grave has had a chance to settle.
An adult internment cost is $600.
An infant internment cost is $300.
Cremated remains in-ground internment is $400.
Yes, you may make arrangements in advance to purchase a grave. Just contact the Cemetery Sexton to make those arrangements.
Yes, cremated remains can be buried in a grave by the Cemetery. The internment fee is $400 for the ashes.
Only one body can be interred in a grave, except in the case of a parent and an infant, or twin children, or two children buried at the same time. Only human beings are allowed to be buried in this Cemetery.
Other exceptions are:
- One body and one ashes could be buried in the same grave at the same time or at different times.
- Two cremated bodies where the ashes are either in one urn or separate urns and the two urns could be buried at separate times. A separate internment fee will be charged for each right of internment.
A columbarium is a place to keep cremated ashes in perpetuity at the Cemetery. Our columbarium is marble structure located just west of our office with landscaping and benches. Please refer to the Columbarium page on this web site.
No, a marker is not required. It would however, help family members find your grave in the future.
You may contact our Sexton, who can help you purchase a memorial marker. The Cemetery is responsible for constructing a foundation. The fee for the foundation is dependent upon the size of the marker you choose. A marker may be purchased at another monument company but must be approved by the Cemetery in advance of being set on site. The Cemetery must approve all materials and shall be stone or bronze. The markers remain the responsibility of the owner of the grave.
Yes, flowers may be placed on graves between November 15 to March 1, Memorial Day and May 15 to June 15. Remember the Cemetery will be mowing the grass areas throughout the growing season. If you choose, a vase may be purchased for flowers and the Cemetery would place the vase near your marker. Flowers may be kept in the vase at anytime throughout the year.
No, hedges, fences, rock or enclosures of any kind will be permitted on or around the graves. No wooden boxes, wreaths, glass jars, bottles, straw or paper flowers, toys, cans and any other unsightly objects will be permitted.
Yes, you may transfer/sell your grave to someone else. You must provide the Cemetery the legal documents transferring the deed.
No, the Cemetery will not buy back any graves.
The Virden Cemetery is managed by a board of directors. They in turn hire a staff to maintain the grounds. Major improvements such as oil and chip the roads, tree trimming, repairs to the office and fence or monuments are hired out to specialists.
The Virden Cemetery is a nonprofit organization. Donations (land and endowments) have been made to the Cemetery over the years. Income from the farmland and investments provide the funds to maintain the Cemetery.
